What is it exactly?
The voice-over or voice actor is the one who provides commentary outside of the screen on what happens on the screen, but also the person you hear in messages on the radio. For example, you hear a voice-over in commercials and cartoons. In documentaries there’s also often a voice-over instead of a host. It matters a lot which voice you use for which purpose. You always want to hold people’s attention, although from a different group every time. That’s the art!
How is a voice-over made?
In a professional recording studio the sound of the voice will be transformed in a digital signal with the best quality possible, with the right microphone, preamp, converter etc. The acoustics from the room with the sound source is optimized to prevent unwanted sound reflections and resonance and to achieve certain reverberation characteristics. Also, the studio has an acoustic isolation that prevents disturbing sounds from outside from being audible in the studio. You also need to think about the placement of the microphone(s) in relation to the sound source and the selection of the microphone(s), because of the big impact it has on the sound. I’m very experienced in all these matters.
